There are millions of people who get Alzheimer’s disease. With that being said, you might be worried that your elderly loved one will develop this disease. It might be helpful for you to know some of the common causes for this disease. When reading these causes, remember that they don’t automatically mean your loved one will or won’t receive a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s.

Cardiovascular Issues

Cardiovascular issues often block some of the body’s blood flow. This can lead to heart disease, strokes, and increase the risk of Alzheimer’s disease. This is because the brain needs the blood flow to work properly. If your elderly loved one smokes, drinks alcohol, or eats unhealthy foods, this could increase their risk of cardiovascular issues. Encourage them to quit doing these things to reduce their risk of getting Alzheimer’s disease.

Being Inactive

If your elderly loved one is inactive most of their life, this could increase their risk of getting Alzheimer’s disease. Research shows that physical activity is important for improving vascular health. If your loved one’s vascular health isn’t good, it will negatively impact their brain’s ability to make new cells. This could lead to Alzheimer’s disease and many other health conditions, as well.

Isolation

If your elderly loved one is by themselves a lot of the time and they have been for a while, this could also increase their risk of getting Alzheimer’s disease. Social connections are important for keeping the brain sharp. Those who live in isolation aren’t engaging in as many mental activities that stimulate their brain. If you want to help your elderly loved one, you should encourage them to read books, go to lectures, or join support groups.

Vision and Hearing Loss

While it might not seem like it, vision and hearing loss could cause your elderly loved one to get Alzheimer’s disease. This is because the brain needs these senses to function fully. Without them, there is a greater risk for cognitive decline. If your elderly loved one does experience vision or hearing loss, it would be helpful if they get the proper treatments as soon as possible to reduce their risk of getting Alzheimer’s disease.

Eating Unhealthy

It is important to know that unhealthy foods are often filled with harmful chemicals, fat, and carbs. They can lead to a buildup of specific proteins in one’s brain. When this happens, it can increase the risk of cognitive issues.

These are some of the things that could cause your elderly loved one to get Alzheimer’s disease. While this doesn’t mean that your loved one will get this disease, it is important to help them live the healthiest life possible to reduce their risk.
